For this version of a noise-o-meter I was inspired by the commercials from when I was a kid of the emergency broadcast system. I remember waking up in the middle of the night, having fallen asleep with the TV on, only to be startled awake by a loud noise and a man saying “this is only a test”.
You post these posters at the front of the classroom where students can easily see them and move a magnet, clothes pin or other shape to identify the noise level you want in the room for that block of time.
There are four categories of noise level:
- Mute Button (quietest)
- Movie Theatre Whisper (quiet talking)
- Hanging Out With Friends (cooperative work)
- Rock Concert (so loud this cannot function or gym class only)
